Bad Habits and What They Can Do to Your Hair

Bad Habits and What They Can Do to Your Hair

We all have bad habits. Whether you aren’t getting enough sleep or you are skipping breakfast in the mornings, bad habits no matter how big or small can take a toll on your hair that you probably didn’t even know about. Here are some examples of bad habits and how damaging they can really be to your hair:

1. Smoking and Excessive Drinking

Fitness for the Masses explains this one perfectly. They talk about what the damaging effects of inhaling carbon monoxide are from smoking and how excessive alcohol consumption lowers the iron in our bodies which is a key nutrient that our hair needs. Click here to read more about how smoking and excessive drinking can be two of the worst habits for your hair. 1

2. Not Getting Enough Sleep

Getting a good eight hours of sleep every night is essential if we want to stay healthy. Lack of sleep can cause thinning hair. Sleeping is the time of the day that the body restores itself. When your body isn’t getting all of the repair and rest that it needs, your hair can get some of the pretty nasty effects from it like leaving it dry, brittle, and lacking luster. It can cause your hair to grow more slowly and even lead to some hair loss. 2

3. Skipping Breakfast

We all know that skipping breakfast is bad for your overall health. That is can affect your metabolism, cause migraines, and even increase your risk of cancer, but did you know that it can also trigger hair loss? Not getting enough protein at the most important meal of the day can affect the levels of keratin in your hair, keeping hair growth to a minimum as well as triggering the loss of some of your hair. Want to keep your hair thick and lush? Make sure you get in that most important meal of the day! 3

4. Not Drinking Enough Water

What is too often overlooked is the effect of dehydration and your hair. Each hair is made up of 1/4 water, and when you’re not getting enough water, it causes your hair to become weak. Plus, water flushes out toxins in your body which could also be a major contributor to hair loss. The more water you drink, the more your health will simply improve from one end of the spectrum to the other! 4

5. Spending Too Much Time Indoors

Being inside anywhere too long is going to affect not only your physical and mental health, but your hair as well. Spending too much time indoors can increase your stress levels, your blood pressure, and your heart rate, which in turn, all of those things can stunt the growth of your hair and cause hair loss. 5

6. Taking Too Much Medicine

Do you pop a pill every time you get a headache, menstrual cramp, when you can’t sleep, etc? All that medicine is wreaking havoc on your hair! Many medications not only limit your hair growth, they can cause hair loss an catastrophes on chemical services at the hair salon. Limit your intake of medicines you don’t really need, and save your hair! 6

Try and be aware every day to improve these habits for not only your hair, but your overall health, as that is most important!

Always seek doctor’s advice before taking or stopping any vitamins or medications. Feel good, enjoy your life, and soak in some sunshine. Stay beautiful and healthy!!

Tips & Remedies for Hair Problems

Many hair related problems like hair loss, rough and dull hair, split ends and breakage,  arise due to lack of proper hair care.  But there are also illnesses and treatments that no product or treatment can prevent hair loss during or after. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help prevent breakage, dry and dull hair, and also as if you have had hair loss due to illness, there are ways to help your hair grow back.

  •  One of the first steps in hair-care is your diet and the two most important things in your diet are iron and protein. Hair cells are the fastest growing cells in the body, they are also the first ones to be affected if you don’t eat right.  Hair is not required for our survival so with deficiencies, hair is the first to suffer.    Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet of proper food and consume excess water to prevent hair breakage. Lean proteins, fruits, raw vegetables, whole grains, legumes, omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon or flaxseed oil and dairy products will keep hair healthy.  Click Here to view our previous article on Vitamins and Nutrients with recipes.

  • Drink Green tea.   Drink at least 24 oz. of green tea every day to help your scalp grow hair back. Green tea lowers the levels of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, in your body.  DHT is one on the main culprits to hair loss, so drinking tea can help your hair grow back in a natural way.  Scientists have found that green tea contains the antioxidant “EGCG” (or epigallocatechin gallate) which has the ability to stimulate hair growth. In addition, by applying green tea directly on the scalp, it results in a significant elongation of the hair follicle.
The anti-inflammatory properties in green tea could help stop hair loss and even promote the growth of new hair. That means that you can use it to cleanse your scalp and fight scalp infections that may weaken your hair roots. Remember a healthy scalp makes it more possible for hair to grow.

Try this scalp treatment:  Wash hair as normal, and then message COOL, freshly                      brewed green tea into your scalp. Leave on for 10 minutes,  rinse with cool water. Repeat 2 to 3 times a week for a couple of months. This rinse will stimulate your hair follicles and help prevent scalp problems like dandruff.  Added bonus: Sprinkle the spent green tea leaves them around your plants and watch them bloom.

  • Drink plenty of water. If you are dehydrated, you don’t have enough water in your body to keep it moisturized. If your body is not moisturized properly, it cannot get the nutrients it needs to grow hair back on your scalp. MayoClinic.com says you should drink at least eight 8-oz. glasses of water every day.

Hate water?  Slice or cube up some fresh organic fruit and drop it into your water for a little flavor and color. Berries, mango, watermelon, pineapple, kiwi and orange are just a few of the colorful fruits which make great additions to a glass of cool water.

There are also things you can do daily to improve the condition of your hair.

  • Brush wet hair with extreme care.   Hair is fragile and prone to breakage when wet. Use a detangler brush and brush the hair starting at the ends and work your way up.  Brush your hair as gently as possible.  Click Here to purchase the Queen C Detangler Brush

  • Trim your hair every 6 to 8 weeks to get rid of split ends. Cut about 1/4 of an inch of your hair to avoid the split ends from moving up the hair shaft and eventually snapping completely off.

  • Don’t shampoo your hair everyday, every two to three days is best. If you shampoo your hair every day, you’re removing the sebum, then the oil glands compensate by producing more oil.  Apply conditioner on the ends, trying to avoid the scalp.  Rinse the conditioner with cold water, this helps  to close the cuticle and seal in moisture from the conditioner — which helps your hair look shiny and healthy.

  • Use a Deep conditioner twice a month.  Even though you condition your hair after you shampoo, a deep conditioner does just that, it penetrates deep into the hair. We love the Beauty & Pin-ups Fearless Treatment Masque and we are also big fans of DIY Hair Masques.  Click Here to view DIY Hair Masque recipes.

  • Don’t over use hot appliances. Also, invest in good tools, even though they are pricier, in the long run they last longer and are definitely better on your hair  . Make sure they offer different heat settings and, in the case of flat irons, display the temperature.  Hair dryers should have a diffuser to help distribute heat more evenly.  When possible, it is best to let your hair dry naturally.  Blow-drying can cause roughness, dryness, and loss of color.   When using a straightening iron, curling iron, etc.  make sure your hair is 100% dry.  Putting these hot tools on even damp hair will cause extreme damage.

If you have fine and/or thin hair by nature or by illness, you can add some volume to your hair.

  • If you need a little uplifting help, message a small amount of mousse into your scalp when it’s still damp and let air dry or blow dry after.

  • Dry your roots first, lifting your hair up or turning your head upside down.  But turn your head back up before completely dry.  If not, this will emphasize a bad growth pattern.

  • Dry shampoo can be your best friend! It gives you a nice lift at the roots. My favorite Dry Shampoo is Stay Dirty by Beauty & Pin-Ups. This stuff is great for adding volume to your roots on day dirty hair, or even right after a blow-dry and style

  • .Clip it in.  If you never thought you could wear hair extensions, think again.   Queen C Hair Extensions offers an Exclusive clip in extension collection called the AIRess Collection.  These exclusive clip ins are super lightweight and made especially for those with fine and/or thin hair.  Made to lay flat against the head, so they are hidden easily.  The clips are  silicone infused with a silicone bar to prevent slipping.   They’re affordable and available at SURVIVORville 2017 and also online at http://www.QueenCHair.com.

Queen C Hair is a proud sponsor of Women Survivors Alliance.  A percentage of proceeds from sells of the AIRess Collection and AIRess Clip & Tie Ponytail Collection are given to WSA.

We are honored to be participating in the makeovers at SURVIVORville 2017.

Vitamin & Nutrient Hair Facts

fun facts cover

Hair plays an important role in a woman’s personal appearance and how we feel about ourselves. We associate luscious locks with health, beauty and youth.

While there are other factors that contribute to hair growth, optimal nutrition intake is key.

The absolute best way to get these nutrients is by eating a balanced, real food-based diet that includes plenty of nutrient based foods.
Your hair grows about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month if you have an adequate diet with healthy nutrients.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is  essential for the production of a protein known as collagen in the body – the amino acid that is responsible for skin rejuvenation, strengthening our bones, teeth and making our hair beautiful and strong.

When you are not getting enough vitamin C, it can lead to dry or splitting hair, which in turn can lead to hair loss.

Vitamin C is water-soluble.  Which means that your body doesn’t store or accumulate it. That’s why daily intake is highly important.

As an added bonus:  Although intake of Vitamin C is not directly linked to upliftment of your mood, it does play an integral role in targeting serotonin.

Vitamin C is another serotonin cofactor that can act as a natural antidepressant. (1)

One study found that participants who were given vitamin C reported feeling happier, often within as little as one week. (2)

Vitamin C Supplementation

If you can’t get adequate amounts of vitamin C through your diet due to illness or other reasons, you may need a supplement. The U.S. Department of Agriculture sets the Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin C at 90 mg daily for men and 75 mg a day for women. If you smoke, are pregnant or breast-feeding, the RDA is increased by 35 mg everyday for both men and women.

Foods Rich in Vitamin C

  1. Citrus Fruits
  2. Bell Peppers
  3. Broccoli
  4. Papaya
  5. Strawberries
  6. Tomatoes

Try to consume these foods in their raw forms, heat causes reduction of Vitamin C in foods.

Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D are linked to alopecia, a technical term for hair loss (3).

Research also shows that vitamin D may help create new follicles — little pores where new hair can grow (4).

One of the things that Vitamin D is known for is helping to reduce stress and keeps you feeling good. This in turn helps keep more hair on your head, especially if your hair loss is exacerbated by extreme levels of stress.  You can actually find Vitamin D inside the follicles of healthy hair, and you don’t find it in the follicles of unhealthy hair.

Listed below is only a fraction of other amazing benefits of Vitamin D.

  1. Vitamin D provides calcium balance in the body and prevents arthritis.
  2. Vitamin D regulates blood pressure and reduces stress and tension. It also relieves body aches and pains by reducing muscle spasms.
  3. Vitamin D also helps to differentiate between cells, aids in insulin secretion and helps to fight depression
  4. Research has indicated that people with low level of Vitamin D have a significantly lower risk of developing cancer, as compared to people with adequate level of Vitamin D.
  5. Vitamin D optimizes our body’s ability to absorb other important weight loss nutrients, especially calcium. If our body lacks calcium, it can lead to up to 5 fold increase in fatty acids synthesis, an enzyme that converts calories into fats.
  6. It is an important way to arm the immune system against disorders like cold and flu.
  7. It also reduces the risk of developing sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is much less common near the tropics where there is ample sunlight.
  8. Vitamin D keeps the brain active even at later stages of life. It also helps to maintain body weight.

Unlike other vitamins, we do not need to get Vitamin D from foods. The main source of Vitamin D is made by our own body with the help of sunlight. Our body can synthesize Vitamin D with adequate exposure to sun.

People who are exposed to normal quantities of sunlight do not need Vitamin D supplements because sunlight promotes sufficient Vitamin D synthesis in the body.

Always consider a doctor before taking any vitamin, as overdose of vitamin D can be harmful.

The best way to get Vitamin D is through sunshine, but sometimes that just isn’t possible.

So here is a list of foods rich in Vitamin D:

  1.  Fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon
  2. Some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals
  3. Beef liver
  4. Cheese
  5. Egg yolks

VITAMIN E

Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E is an antioxidant that can prevent oxidative stress.

In one study, people with hair loss experienced a 34.5% increase in hair growth after supplementing with vitamin E for 8 months (5).

Vitamin E is a great stimulant for growth of capillaries, when the capillaries are healthy and profuse, the blood circulation in the scalp will be enhanced which will therefore promote strong and healthy growth of hair.

Vitamin E contains effective and potent antioxidants that inhibit good health of our body tissues, when our body tissues are strong and healthy, our aging process slows down as well. Therefore, aging signs that may appear in our skin and hair will slow down as well. With regular intake of vitamin D, you will notice that not only will the skin look younger, but premature graying of the hair will be prevented as well (6).

Foods Rich in Vitamin E

  1.   Almonds
  2.   Spinach
  3.   Sweet Potato
  4.   Avocado
  5.   Wheat germ
  6.   Sunflower Seeds
  7.   Palm Oil
  8.   Butternut squash
  9.   Trout
  10.   Olive Oil

IRON

A review of 40 years of research shows that iron deficiency has a much closer link to hair loss than most doctors realize. It may be the key to restoring hair growth, Cleveland Clinic dermatologists find (7).

Iron deficiency hair loss is caused when the body lacks enough iron to produce hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is the ingredient that carries oxygen for the growth and repair of all body cells including the cells that make up hair follicles.

Foods Rich in Iron

  1.  Red meat
  2. Leafy vegetables
  3. Beans and lentils
  4. Pistachios
  5. Tofu
  6. Cereals and breads that are fortified with iron
  7. Black-eyed peas and chickpeas
  8. Clams and oysters
  9. Liver
  10. Molasses
  11. Grits
  12. Raisins

I can’t say this enough.  Do not take iron supplements on your own.  Unless you have iron deficiency — diagnosed by a doctor — iron supplements can lead to a very dangerous condition from iron overload.

Protein

Hair made almost entirely made up of protein filaments, called keratin, and chains of amino acids. Exposure to harsh chemicals and poor maintenance can break up the chains and lead to brittle, dull, and damaged strands.  Protein strengthens and repairs the keratin, therefore giving hair structure and helping it grow longer and stronger.

Protein is essential for every organ in your body. It is particularly involved in healthy hair. Keratinocytes are responsible for making keratin, a type of protein essential to hair growth. If you do not take in enough in your diet, hair loss can occur or hair can become dull and brittle.

An added benefit I know you will love.  It can help you lose weight (especially belly fat), and increase your muscle mass and strength (8,9).

Foods High in Protein

  1. Eggs
  2. Almonds
  3. Chicken Breast
  4. Oats
  5. Cottage Cheese
  6. Greek Yogurt
  7. Broccoli
  8. Lean Beef
  9. Tuna
  10.  Quinoa
  11.  Pumpkin Seeds
  12.  Turkey Breast
  13.  Fish
  14.  Shrimp
  15.  Peanuts
