Vitamin & Nutrient Hair Facts

fun facts cover

Hair plays an important role in a woman’s personal appearance and how we feel about ourselves. We associate luscious locks with health, beauty and youth.

While there are other factors that contribute to hair growth, optimal nutrition intake is key.

The absolute best way to get these nutrients is by eating a balanced, real food-based diet that includes plenty of nutrient based foods.
Your hair grows about 1/4 to 1/2 inch every month if you have an adequate diet with healthy nutrients.

VITAMIN C

Vitamin C is  essential for the production of a protein known as collagen in the body – the amino acid that is responsible for skin rejuvenation, strengthening our bones, teeth and making our hair beautiful and strong.

When you are not getting enough vitamin C, it can lead to dry or splitting hair, which in turn can lead to hair loss.

Vitamin C is water-soluble.  Which means that your body doesn’t store or accumulate it. That’s why daily intake is highly important.

As an added bonus:  Although intake of Vitamin C is not directly linked to upliftment of your mood, it does play an integral role in targeting serotonin.

Vitamin C is another serotonin cofactor that can act as a natural antidepressant. (1)

One study found that participants who were given vitamin C reported feeling happier, often within as little as one week. (2)

Vitamin C Supplementation

If you can’t get adequate amounts of vitamin C through your diet due to illness or other reasons, you may need a supplement. The U.S. Department of Agriculture sets the Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin C at 90 mg daily for men and 75 mg a day for women. If you smoke, are pregnant or breast-feeding, the RDA is increased by 35 mg everyday for both men and women.

Foods Rich in Vitamin C

  1. Citrus Fruits
  2. Bell Peppers
  3. Broccoli
  4. Papaya
  5. Strawberries
  6. Tomatoes

Try to consume these foods in their raw forms, heat causes reduction of Vitamin C in foods.

Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D are linked to alopecia, a technical term for hair loss (3).

Research also shows that vitamin D may help create new follicles — little pores where new hair can grow (4).

One of the things that Vitamin D is known for is helping to reduce stress and keeps you feeling good. This in turn helps keep more hair on your head, especially if your hair loss is exacerbated by extreme levels of stress.  You can actually find Vitamin D inside the follicles of healthy hair, and you don’t find it in the follicles of unhealthy hair.

Listed below is only a fraction of other amazing benefits of Vitamin D.

  1. Vitamin D provides calcium balance in the body and prevents arthritis.
  2. Vitamin D regulates blood pressure and reduces stress and tension. It also relieves body aches and pains by reducing muscle spasms.
  3. Vitamin D also helps to differentiate between cells, aids in insulin secretion and helps to fight depression
  4. Research has indicated that people with low level of Vitamin D have a significantly lower risk of developing cancer, as compared to people with adequate level of Vitamin D.
  5. Vitamin D optimizes our body’s ability to absorb other important weight loss nutrients, especially calcium. If our body lacks calcium, it can lead to up to 5 fold increase in fatty acids synthesis, an enzyme that converts calories into fats.
  6. It is an important way to arm the immune system against disorders like cold and flu.
  7. It also reduces the risk of developing sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is much less common near the tropics where there is ample sunlight.
  8. Vitamin D keeps the brain active even at later stages of life. It also helps to maintain body weight.

Unlike other vitamins, we do not need to get Vitamin D from foods. The main source of Vitamin D is made by our own body with the help of sunlight. Our body can synthesize Vitamin D with adequate exposure to sun.

People who are exposed to normal quantities of sunlight do not need Vitamin D supplements because sunlight promotes sufficient Vitamin D synthesis in the body.

Always consider a doctor before taking any vitamin, as overdose of vitamin D can be harmful.

The best way to get Vitamin D is through sunshine, but sometimes that just isn’t possible.

So here is a list of foods rich in Vitamin D:

  1.  Fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon
  2. Some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals
  3. Beef liver
  4. Cheese
  5. Egg yolks

VITAMIN E

Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E is an antioxidant that can prevent oxidative stress.

In one study, people with hair loss experienced a 34.5% increase in hair growth after supplementing with vitamin E for 8 months (5).

Vitamin E is a great stimulant for growth of capillaries, when the capillaries are healthy and profuse, the blood circulation in the scalp will be enhanced which will therefore promote strong and healthy growth of hair.

Vitamin E contains effective and potent antioxidants that inhibit good health of our body tissues, when our body tissues are strong and healthy, our aging process slows down as well. Therefore, aging signs that may appear in our skin and hair will slow down as well. With regular intake of vitamin D, you will notice that not only will the skin look younger, but premature graying of the hair will be prevented as well (6).

Foods Rich in Vitamin E

  1.   Almonds
  2.   Spinach
  3.   Sweet Potato
  4.   Avocado
  5.   Wheat germ
  6.   Sunflower Seeds
  7.   Palm Oil
  8.   Butternut squash
  9.   Trout
  10.   Olive Oil

IRON

A review of 40 years of research shows that iron deficiency has a much closer link to hair loss than most doctors realize. It may be the key to restoring hair growth, Cleveland Clinic dermatologists find (7).

Iron deficiency hair loss is caused when the body lacks enough iron to produce hemoglobin in the blood. Hemoglobin is the ingredient that carries oxygen for the growth and repair of all body cells including the cells that make up hair follicles.

Foods Rich in Iron

  1.  Red meat
  2. Leafy vegetables
  3. Beans and lentils
  4. Pistachios
  5. Tofu
  6. Cereals and breads that are fortified with iron
  7. Black-eyed peas and chickpeas
  8. Clams and oysters
  9. Liver
  10. Molasses
  11. Grits
  12. Raisins

I can’t say this enough.  Do not take iron supplements on your own.  Unless you have iron deficiency — diagnosed by a doctor — iron supplements can lead to a very dangerous condition from iron overload.

Protein

Hair made almost entirely made up of protein filaments, called keratin, and chains of amino acids. Exposure to harsh chemicals and poor maintenance can break up the chains and lead to brittle, dull, and damaged strands.  Protein strengthens and repairs the keratin, therefore giving hair structure and helping it grow longer and stronger.

Protein is essential for every organ in your body. It is particularly involved in healthy hair. Keratinocytes are responsible for making keratin, a type of protein essential to hair growth. If you do not take in enough in your diet, hair loss can occur or hair can become dull and brittle.

An added benefit I know you will love.  It can help you lose weight (especially belly fat), and increase your muscle mass and strength (8,9).

Foods High in Protein

  1. Eggs
  2. Almonds
  3. Chicken Breast
  4. Oats
  5. Cottage Cheese
  6. Greek Yogurt
  7. Broccoli
  8. Lean Beef
  9. Tuna
  10.  Quinoa
  11.  Pumpkin Seeds
  12.  Turkey Breast
  13.  Fish

9 Benefits of Vitamin B for Your Hair

9 Benefits of Vitamin B for your hair1

The Vitamin B Connection

Vitamin B plays such an important role in achieving and maintaining healthy hair. Read the facts below and let us know your thoughts.

Vitamin B prevents hair fall and promotes new hair growth. By including Vitamin B in your diet on a daily basis you can improve your hair and achieve lustre and shine.
If you are suffering from hair loss, include Vitamin B foods in your diet. For thick, strong and shiny hair, you have to include ample amounts of vitamins and minerals in your diet. When a person lacks essential nutrients because of poor diet, the hair will become brittle, thin with no shine or luster. In severe conditions, it can even lead to baldness.

Thiamine helps to improve the blood circulation of the scalp. This speeds up the hair growth process and provides oxygen to hair follicles.

Queen of the Month

“Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend never owned a dog”

This month (June), our Queen is a friend of the queen herself, a dog lover, and a soon-to-be wife! Who is this catch? Mary Davis is one of the most kind-hearted, sincere people that we have ever met.

mary and dogs.jpg

Currently, Mary resides in Hendersonville, Tennessee with her soon-to-be husband and her 3 perfect dogs.

She has worked at Volunteer Veterinary Clinic for 26 years, and loves being around her passion every day…her animals and her man! (Her fiancé is a Veterinarian there)

When we asked her, she reveals that one thing people do not know about her is that she likes research and detective work. Learning about the legal aspect of things has always interested her.

Her favorite things to do are impressive. She loves gardening, meditation, Barre, video games, and cooking.

When asked what she thought of Queen C Hair Extensions, she said “I think they are far superior to any other hair extensions I have seen. They are softer and the wefts are thinner, yet stronger. They are easy to put in, easy to cover and hide the wefts, and they look and FEEL like my hair!”.

After asking her what the best compliment she has received on her AIRess clip-in Extensions is so far, she told us that “although I have not had them long, I think the best compliment I have gotten is that no one knows that it is NOT my hair!”. She added, “My favorite thing about them is that they look and feel so much like my own hair, only better!”.

Mary

She said that “the best style secret, when it comes to my Queen C Hair Extensions is that you do not have to put all of them in everyday. Depending on how much you want to wear your hair, on any given day (or how much time you have) you can put in one, three, or all of them, and it still looks great!”.

Mary has worn bonded extensions for years (literally), and she wanted to give her hair a break from them, but didn’t want to give up the luxury of thick hair. She has two auto-immune disorders and although her hair grows long, it does not grow thick. She feels as if Queen C Hair Extensions give her the hair she used to have!

We feel honored to have Mary in our Royal Family, and would love to have you in our family as well! If you would like the chance to be the next “Queen of the Month”, all you have to do to enter, is send us at least three photos of you wearing your Queen C Hair to info@queenchair.com. If you are chosen, we will send you a questionnaire to fill out so we can get to know you and your story!

17 Hacks Every Woman Should Know

With life busier now than ever, we women will take all the help we can get to make life just a little bit easier. Here, we have compiled a list of hacks you can incorporate in your daily life, and things you may never go back to after learning of these easy beauty, organization, and other easy hacks!

foundation.jpg

  1. Test your foundation on your neck instead of your arm.

Nails

2. Need your nails to dry fast? Submerge your just-painted nails into cold water for just a few minutes. When you remove your fingertips, the polish will be dry!

3. You can also dry your nails quickly by spraying PAM on your wet polish.

gum

4. For all you moms, your life will be so much easier when you learn of this trick: Use ice cubes to remove gum from hair. It will harden the gum, making it easier to remove. You can use this method for removing gum on any unwanted surface.

5. Use clear nail polish on the inside of your rings to prevent those tell-tell green stains on your skin.

belts

6. Hang your purses and belts with shower hooks. This is a great method to try for anyone, reducing clutter and making your purses and belts easier to find.

7. Paint your keys with nail polish to easily distinguish the sets. This is a good trick for houseguests, babysitters, ect.

suitcase

8. When packing your suitcase, wrap your shoes in a shower cap to prevent the soles of your shoes touching your clean clothes.

scrub

9. The best kept secret to super smooth legs: Shave, then use an olive oil/sugar scrub. Then, shave again. It will get off dead skin that you did not even know was there!

tea

10. 10 teas to try when you:

Have a headache- ginger tea

Have bad breath- black tea

Have the jitters- pass flower tea

Have the allergy sniffles- Nettle tea

Have 3pm cravings- green tea

Feel unintelligent- gingko tea

Want to sleep- Valerian Tea

Have a sweet tooth- licorice tea

Have belly woes- peppermint tea

Want faster calorie burn- oolong tea

chalk

11. Use chalk to get rid of grease stains.

stain

12.  When you get something that can stain on your clothes, immediately spray that spot with hairspray to prevent the stain from setting in.

coffee

13. Get rid of unwanted hair anywhere! For one week: Rub 1 Tbsp of coffee grinds mixed with 1 Tsp of baking soda on the area of the unwanted hair. The baking soda intensifies the compounds of the coffee, and causes it to break down the hair follicles at the root.

lemon

14. Squeeze lemon juice onto sweat stains before putting it into the washer to remove the stain completely!

olive oil

15. Coat your razor with olive oil between shaves to prevent it from rusting.

sleep

16. Use dry shampoo at night rather than in the morning, so it has all night to soak up any oil and sweat.

jewelry

17. When traveling, put your necklace through a straw and secure the clasp of the necklace to prevent any tangling.

Hopefully at least one of these hacks will be helpful to you in your everyday life, and if you know a hack that you know and love, we would love to learn it! Put your favorite hacks in the comments below!

10 Ways To Pamper Your Mom This Mother's Day

“Life does not come with a manual, it comes with a mother”

Mother’s Day is a special day to all of us, whether you are celebrating your mom, being celebrated as a mom, or celebrating a special person in your life who just happens to be a mom.

Growing up, every child sees their mom as “Superwoman”, and then as we grow up and have children ourselves, thinking our mom is “Superwoman” is an understatement. So this Mother’s Day, treat the woman who deserves everything to something she will never forget.

FullSizeRender (3)

  1. Make her home sparkle. If you are a mother yourself, you know it is not a walk in the park managing your house on top of everything else life demands of us. Thank your mom for all she does and has done for you by cleaning her house as one small token of gratitude.
  2. Offer her a spa day. Whether your mom’s favorite day-escape is a facial, a massage, a visit to the hair salon, or a full day at the spa, surprise her with her favorite mini-getaway.

3. Wine and Dine. Take your mom to a local winery or brewery that she has not yet visited and dine in to make the experience even more filling fulfilling.

4. Give to other moms. Local shelters dedicated to mothers and their children are always in need of support. You and your mom can give back to other mothers with a small donation of your time or gently used items.

FullSizeRender (2)5. Enroll her in an interesting class. Is there something she says she has always wanted to try,  but would never actually sign herself up for? Treat your mother with not only signing her up, but with you joining her to go to the class.

6. Sign her up for a wine of the month club. If your mom loves a refreshing glass of Chardonnay  in the summer and a rich glass of Merlot on the cold days, sign her up for a wine of the month club so that she’s got the perfect bottle of wine year-round.

7. If your mom prefers beer, there are also beer of the month clubs.

FullSizeRender (4).jpg

8. Help her plant a garden. May is the perfect time to be in the garden when all the beautiful flowers and vegetables are growing. Take a few hours out of your day by spending that precious time with your precious mom creating not only beautiful scenery, but unforgettable memories.

9. Let her pick. All of the above ideas are thoughtful and unique, but remember that sometimes she just wants (and deserves) to choose what she wants on the day that is actually about her. So before you make plans for her, simply ask what she would like to do.

FullSizeRender (5).jpg

10. Keep it simple. To her, your mom’s idea of a perfect Mother’s Day may just be spending time with you. If that is what she is asking of you or from you, then give her the best gift she could receive… the gift of time.

How will you spend Mother’s Day this year? Let us know in the comments below!
